Why Art Belongs in After-School Routines
When it comes to after-school activities are is often overlooked. But art classes offer more than just a creative outlet - they foster emotional wellbeing, problem-solving, focus, and confidence. That’s why having art incorporated into your child’s after-school routine can be invaluable.
The Importance of After-School Activities
In general, after-school routines are part of a helpful daily structure. They provide a bridge between formal education and downtime, offering opportunities to explore interests that may not be covered in the classroom.
Whether it’s sports, languages, or art, these post-school activities can give children time to build new skills and develop a stronger sense of identity outside the classroom. They offer the chance to challenge themselves, collaborate with others, and gain confidence through doing something they genuinely enjoy. And if it’s art they like doing, there’s plenty of sessions available at Studio 48!
Creative Development Builds Life Skills
Participating in regular art classes teaches far more than how to draw or paint. Children learn to think creatively, make decisions independently, and problem-solve in real time. Whether it’s choosing colours, figuring out how to fix a mistake, or interpreting an abstract prompt, young artists develop flexible thinking skills they’ll carry into every area of life.
Art has also long been recognised as a therapeutic tool, and for children navigating busy school days or emotional changes, after-school art sessions offer a safe, supportive space to unwind. They encourage emotional expression in a non-verbal way, helping children process their thoughts and feelings through creativity. This not only supports mental wellbeing but also builds resilience, giving children healthy outlets for managing stress and boosting their self-esteem.
Encouraging Focus and Patience
Creative tasks require concentration and attention to detail, but they also reward patience. This makes art a natural tool for helping children slow down and stay engaged. While many after-school activities focus on speed or performance, art is done at a very different pace, one where the process is just as important as the result.
Art also offers a tactile, hands-on activity that engages all senses and gives children the freedom to be imaginative. There is no “wrong” way to create. This encourages children to experiment and build confidence in their ideas. Plus by sharing their work with other students in a relaxed, judgment-free space further boosts self-esteem.
