Try a few of these easy Halloween crafts at home, and watch your little ones get into the spooky spirit!
Paper Plate Ghosts
A simple, but effective Halloween craft is the classic paper plate ghost. It’s easy enough for younger artists, yet still fun for the older kids too.
Materials:
- Paper plates
- White crepe paper or tissue paper
- Black construction paper
- Glue
- Scissors
To create a ghost cut out features like eyes and a mouth from black construction paper and glue them to the paper plate. Then, attach strips of white tissue or crepe paper to the bottom of the plate for the ghost's body.
Mummy Jars
Turn empty jars into glowing mummies that add a little spookiness to any room!
Materials:
- Glass jars – any size but a tall thinner one works best
- Googly eyes
- Glue
- White gauze bandage
- Battery operated candle
Glue a couple eyes onto the jar. Then start applying glue from the bottom of the jar and wrap it with the gauze. Wrap the entire jar, gluing as needed. Make sure not to cover the Googly eyes with the bandage but let them just peek out. Place the battery-operated candle inside and you’ve got a glowing mummy!
Note: You can also use white tape to wrap around the jar.
Pom-Pom Spiders
Pom-pom spiders are a playful, less-scary version of the creepy crawlers.
Materials:
- Black pom-poms
- Black yarn
- Googly eyes
- Black pipe cleaners
- Glue
Take a pom-pom and 2 pipe cleaners. Glue eyes (as many as you want!) onto the pom-pom. Add a little red felt mouth onto the pom-pom too if wanted.
Cut each pipe cleaner in half so you have 4 shorter pieces. Make sure there are no sharp ends by trimming any points for safety. To create the spider's eight legs, take the four pipe cleaners and align their ends. Tie them together in the middle using a short piece of pipe cleaner or string. Gently fan out the legs to give your spider a natural look. Then bend each leg down at a similar point to give your spider a sturdy stance. It should be able to stand upright, but adjust the legs and re-bend if necessary.
Glue your pom-pom with eyes in the middle of the legs and let dry. You should have an adorable little standing spider!
Pumpkin Painting
Carving pumpkins is a classic Halloween activity, but it can be messy and difficult for younger kids. A great alternative is pumpkin painting.
Materials:
- Mini pumpkins
- Acrylic paints
- Paintbrushes
- Decorative items like glitter, stickers, or googly eyes
Kids can paint their pumpkins any way they like—whether it's a spooky face, a friendly monster, or an abstract design. The best part is that painted pumpkins last longer than carved ones, and there’s no pumpkin guts and seeds to clean up!
Paper Bag Monster Puppets
This project is great for interactive play and inspiring kids.
Materials:
- Brown paper bags
- Markers
- Construction paper
- Gue
- Decorative items like yarn, stickers, or googly eyes
Cut out shapes from the construction paper to make mouths, horns, fangs etc. and glue them onto the bag. Glue googly eyes and add yarn for hair or use markets to draw scales, fur, or other textures. Once dried and finished you have little puppets to put on a show!
